Vol. 219 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment at Bord na Móna Works.

14.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if, in view of the fact that a number of employees at the Bord na Móna peat works at Kilberry, Athy, County Kildare, have received notice terminating their employment, and that it is anticipated that in all some 75 men will lose their employment owing to further mechanisation at Kilberry, he will state what steps, if any, are being taken by Bord na Móna to provide alternative employment for these men.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that men who have been laid off at Kilberry—ten in number—are seasonal workers, and that no other men are under notice at present. It is not clear at the moment what effect the bad summer weather of 1965 may have on employment between now and next spring but it is expected to be minimal and every effort will be made to keep it so.

Bord na Móna add that in the long term it is not envisaged that increased mechanisation will give rise to any difficulty which would not be met by normal labour wastage and an appropriate recruitment policy.
