Classifying the gainfully occupied to social groups on the basis of their principal occupation and similarly assigning the non-gainfully occupied on the basis of the occupation of the head of the household, the estimated number of persons in the social group "Farmers, farmers' relatives and farm managers" with holdings of rateable valuation under £60 at the 1961 Census of Population was 660,000 or 23 per cent of the total population.
No reliable data about the numbers of persons in families with family incomes of different sizes are available, but the Deputy is no doubt aware that in the recent White Paper on The Health Services and their Further Development, it is stated that the lower and middle income groups, as defined in that document, will make up over 90 per cent of the population.
