Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Survey of Irish Industry.

53.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is considering re-examining Irish industry in the light of the new trade agreement with Britain along the lines on which the CIO examined Irish industry in the context of the EEC.

The CIO in its reports made it clear that the examination of Irish industry which it initiated in the EEC context would be relevant to conditions of freer trade generally. In the context of the Second Programme for Economic Expansion, a continuous review of industrial progress is carried out by the Department of Finance and my Department in consulation with both sides of industry. The results of this review for 1964 were summarised in the NIEC Report on Review of Industrial Progress 1964 and I understand that a similar report for 1965 will be issued shortly by the NIEC. I think this system of review fulfils the purpose of re-examining Irish industry which the Deputy has in mind.
