Vol. 220 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tax on Loan Interest Payments.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance the estimated percentage return in tax revenue from interest payments to subscribers to Irish national loans.

I regret that statistics of taxation receipts are not compiled in such a manner as to enable this information to be given.

Is there not a general rule of thumb that a third of the interest on national loans goes back into the Exchequer?

I am not aware of that rule of thumb.

I heard one of the Minister's predecessors, Deputy MacEntee, so stating at one time. That would mean that the equivalent of six per cent external loan would be nine per cent in our own home rates.
