Vol. 220 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - 1916 Medallion.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance if the 1916 memorial medallion will bear an English hallmark and be subject to duty on entering the State.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the sterling value of the gold contained in the 1916 memorial medallion selling at £110.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 7 and 8 together.

The medallions in question are not liable to duty. Gold and silver medallions struck in England are subject to the laws governing hall-marking in that country. Whether or not they bear an English hallmark, these medallions must be sent to the Assay Master of the Company of Goldsmiths of the City of Dublin for marking by him, before they are cleared through the customs. The hallmark in such cases is commonly known as the Irish Foreign Mark and differs from the hallmark stamped on Irish-made articles.

The sterling value of the gold contained in the gold medallion has not been valued for official purposes.
