Vol. 220 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Recording and Progency Testing.

59.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if there are plans before his Department for a national milk recording and progeny testing scheme under the aegis of the IAOS and AI stations; and, if not, if he will consider introducing such a scheme.

For some years past my Department has been discussing with the AI societies the question of improving the existing milk recording and progeny testing facilities, but so far general agreement on a satisfactory scheme has not been reached. There is no difference of opinion on the desirability of improvements. The problem is to get a sound and practicable scheme that all concerned will agree to.

Is it not true that the north-west cattle breeders in Sligo have bought a farm for this purpose? I should get my information up to date.

Perhaps the Parliamentary Secretary would tell Deputy Crowley for how long the discussions have been proceeding?

For some years past.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say 25 years?

No, I would not say that.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say 20 years? They have been going on to my knowledge for 20 years.

(Interruptions.)

That statement is a falsehood and you know it to be such.

The Deputy did not deny it at the right time.
