The names and addresses of contractors from whom vans or other vehicles were hired for Christmas postal work in all areas, excluding Dublin, and the number of vehicles hired from each contractor are given in a statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.
The total cost of hireage was £996 5s. 6d. (111 vehicles).
In many postal areas it is not necessary to hire vans or other vehicles at Christmas as the extra services required are provided by using the official vans more intensively or by the Department's regular mail car contractors at no extra cost, under the conditions of their contracts. Where these facilities are inadequate postmasters are authorised to hire any vehicles required at the cheapest rates obtainable having regard to the service to be performed. In the majority of cases the vehicles hired are hackney cars.
