Vol. 221 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Embassy in Lagos.

6.

asked the Minister for External Affairs what progress has been made with the building of the Embassy in Lagos, Nigeria.

As the Embassy premises which we have been renting for the past four years came on the market recently, it has been decided to purchase them and the proposal to build is not being proceeded with.

Could the Minister tell the House what amount of money was spent on the building and what was the price paid for the premises in fact purchased?

The building was not started. The plot was leased at a rent of a couple of hundred pounds a year.

What is the cost of the building that has been purchased?

£25,000. In addition to that building we still have an office which is being occupied, since we were represented in Lagos, and also a secretary's house.

No shortage of money.

No shortage of money. Twenty houses at home might be better.

That might be the Deputy's opinion.

We are buying ten times more from them than they are from us.
