Vol. 221 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - 1916 Ceremonies in Six Counties.

2.

Mr. O'Leary

asked the Taoiseach if he will arrange with Mr. O'Neill that commemoration ceremonies being held in the Six County area will not be interfered with by Six County authorities; and that those bearing a tricolour at these ceremonies will not be molested by such authorities.

I do not consider that representations, as suggested by the Deputy, would be helpful. Recent regrettable incidents have not altered my hope that the commemoration ceremonies will take place in all parts of Ireland in a fitting and dignified manner and in an atmosphere free from dissension and animosity.

Does the Taoiseach believe that the Tricolour will be permitted to be carried at parades in the North?

The Deputy should not ask that question of me.

Would the Taoiseach not take steps to ensure that in any orderly parades the Tricolour will be permitted——

I take it the Deputies are concerned, as I am, to avoid intensifying any effort that may be made up there to revive old animosities.

Yes, but we do not like the inference of the Taoiseach that we are otherwise.

Would the Taoiseach make any protest against the statement of Mr. Carson on television the other night?

Make it yourself.

The Taoiseach is supposed to be running the country.
