Vol. 221 No. 7

Written Answers. - Trade Mark Applications.

146.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will give particulars of trade mark applications for 1964 and 1965 in the terms of the reply to Question No. 40 of 9th April 1964.

I am giving particulars of applications advertised and registered rather than accepted, as given in the reply to which the Deputy refers, because I think that the figures in this form give a more accurate picture of the position.

The numbers of applications for the registration of trade marks which were received, advertised in the Official Journal and registered in the year ended 31st March 1964 were 1733, 1170 and 1004 respectively. The number of applications which were regarded as abandoned, withdrawn or refused in the same period was 375. The percentage of marks advertised to applications received was 67.5 per cent.

The corresponding figures for the year ended 31st March, 1965 were 1,873, 1,531, 1,431, 404 and 81.7 per cent respectively.

I think I should warn the Deputy that these percentage figures may be misleading, as many of the applications dealt with in a particular year would have been received in a prior year.
