Vol. 221 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Depot Shop.

56.

asked the Minister for Justice whether there is a shop in the Garda Depot in Templemore, County Tipperary; if so, the estimated and actual cost and the size thereof; whether any defects were found therein; if so, if he will give details thereof; the goods sold therein; by whom it was operated; when it opened; the weekly cost of running it and the weekly turnover; and the profit or loss to date.

There is no shop, as such, in the Templemore Training Centre. There are, however, two canteens: one for recruits in training and the other for the training staff.

The adaptation of these rooms was carried out as part of the general scheme of reconstruction of the Templemore Barracks and separate figures of the cost of the work are not available.

There have been no defects in these canteens, which have been in operation since the opening of the Training Centre in February, 1964.

The canteens are managed on an unofficial basis by the Training Centre Welfare Committee, which provides and maintains various amenities for the recruits in training. Light refreshments are provided, and sales consist of cigarettes and minor sundry items which are made available for the convenience of recruits. The canteens are managed without cost to the State and I have no function in relation to the financial arrangements.
