Vol. 221 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Mountain Sheep-farmers.

40.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether he has any plans to assist the mountain sheep-farmers in County Mayo; and if he will specify the particular areas in which he proposes to put such plans into operation.

My Department operates a number of schemes to assist mountain sheep breeders, including those in County Mayo, as follows:—

(1) A special scheme for the fencing of mountain grazings under the Land Project.

(2) A supplementary keep scheme also under the Land Project.

(3) A scheme for the location of good quality rams at reduced cost in the congested districts.

My Department has co-operated with the local Sheep Breeders Association in the arrangement of an annual sale in the Tourmakeady area of Blackface Mountain rams and also in encouraging the production of Greyface ewes in the adjoining marginal land.

I have recently arranged for an expert study of the sheep and lamb industry. The study group is considering the question of sheep production in Mayo and other mountainous districts but recommendations or suggestions in relation to such matters have not yet been formulated.

As the Deputy will be aware, a senior officer of my Department has been appointed Western Regional Officer to devise and co-ordinate schemes for the development of western agriculture, including sheep production.
