Vol. 221 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Liquor Imports.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the value of (a) beer, (b) lager, (c) Scotch whisky, and (d) other spirits imported each year from 1956 to 1965, inclusive.

With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the available information for the years in question. The official Import List under which imports are classified does not distinguish between lager and other beers or between Scotch and other whiskies. An examination of some of the original import documents has shown that while importers do not in all cases indicate whether the whiskey imported is Scotch or not most of the whiskey imported from Great Britain is, in fact, Scotch whisky and such imports have, therefore, been shown separately in the statement.

Following is the statement:

Could the Parliamentary Secretary tell me if the imports are on the increase over the past few years?

I should imagine the matter is only one of academic interest to the Deputy.

Is brandy separate or included in "other spirits"?

In "other spirits".
