Vol. 222 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Meath Farm.

29.

asked the Minister for Lands if the proposed sale of the outlying Sheridan Farm at Newcastle, Oldcastle, County Meath, was brought to the notice of the Land Commission; and what action was taken by the Land Commission.

The Land Commission have no information about any proposed sale of the holding mentioned in the question.

I might add that proceedings are in progress for the acquisition of a Finegan (formerly Sheridan) estate comprising 137 acres at Omard, County Cavan, which is about 12 miles from Oldcastle, and it is hoped to take possession quite soon, possibly next month.

Is the Minister not aware that I personally brought to the notice of the Land Commission the fact that this farm was about to be sold and requested that it should be investigated, and that I received an acknowledgment saying that the matter was under consideration?

I understand that it is under consideration.

The Minister is not aware that since that notification the farm has been sold to two men over 80 years of age who already have over 200 acres? Surely if the Land Commission are going to use their new found powers in the Land Act in that way, it was a waste of time passing it?

It may be that there was some misunderstanding about the holding referred to by the Deputy and the holding in respect of which this reply refers.

If I bring it to the Minister's notice, will he have it investigated further?

I certainly will.
