Vol. 222 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Forestry Employment.

58.

asked the Minister for Lands the number of men employed at forestry work on 1st March in each of the last three years; the number laid off in March 1964 and 1965; and the number under notice to be laid off in March 1966.

Employment at State forests is casual on a day to day basis and records which would be required to answer the Deputy's question are not maintained. The actual numbers of men employed as at the beginning of March and April in each year are as follows:

Week ended 6th March, 1964

4,942

,, ,, 3rd April, 1964

4,854

,, ,, 5th March, 1965

4,896

,, ,, 2nd April, 1965

4,892

,, ,, 4th March, 1966

4,623

The figures are affected not alone by the taking on and laying off of men but also by variations in absenteeism.
