asked the Minister for Defence if he will give the rate of pension and gratuity payable to each officer, NCO and man in the Army with 20 years' or more service, giving the amount of the actual pension or gratuity for married men and for children.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement with notes, I propose, with your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

NOTES: 1. Retired Pay varies with the number of years' service and the number of years in the retiring rank.

2. Only married officers are eligible for gratuities on retirement. The maximum gratuity is payable in all cases after 20 years' service.

3. The benefits payable on retirement to married officers do not include separate elements in respect of children.

NOTES: 1. Where service is 22 years or more the weekly rate of pension is increased by one shilling in respect of each year in excess of 21 years but not in excess of 31 years.

2. A minimum of 21 years' service is required for the grant of a pension to a non-commissioned officer or private who is discharged on grounds other than disability or age. In the latter two instances a minimum of 15 years' service is necessary.

3. Non-commissioned officers and privates are not eligible for gratuities on discharge, in addition to pensions, but married personnel are eligible for an additional married pension.

4. The benefits payable on discharge to married non-commissioned officers and privates do not include separate elements in respect of children.
