82.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what has been the financial saving (1) to his Department and (2) to the State by the substitution of motor van mail delivery for bicycle delivery from Carrigallen post office, County Leitrim; and under what heads this saving has taken place.

83.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs what has been the financial saving (1) to his Department and (2) to the State by the substitution of motor van mail delivery for bicycle delivery from Arigna post office and Altagowlan post office, County Roscommon; and under what heads this saving has taken place.

With your permission, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 82 and 83 together.

There has been no net saving to date because of the expenditure involved in the purchase of the vans.

The average saving over a period of years is estimated at approximately £70 a year for the Arigna/Altagowlan scheme and £120 a year for the Carrigallen scheme, to be secured by reduction in staff costs.

I have not sufficient information to make a reliable estimate under (2) of the questions.
