Vol. 222 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Licensed Premises.

71.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Justice if he will cause a review to be made of the manner in which licensed premises in Cork are being conducted, particularly with regard to the serving of intoxicating liquors to young women and girls, with a view to enabling the authorities to object, if necessary, to the renewal of certain licences at the next annual licensing court for Cork city.

The law provides that objection may be made at the Annual Licensing District Court to the grant of a certificate for the renewal of an intoxicating liquor licence on the ground of the character, misconduct or unfitness of the applicant. Members of the public, as well as the Gardai, are entitled to object.

It is an offience for a licensee to supply intoxicating liquor for consumption on the premises to persons under 18 and it is also an offence to permit drunkenness on the premises or to allow it to be used for certain disorderly purposes. A conviction for any of the offences is endorsable on the licence.

If information tending to show that any of these offences is being committed in any particular premises is brought to the notice of the Gardaí they will take appropriate action and they will consider, among other things, whether objection should be made to the grant of the certificate for the renewal of the licence.
