Vol. 222 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Control of Prostitution.

72.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Justice if he considers that the legislation at present applicable to the prevention and control of prostitution, particularly amongst young girls in Cork city, is effective; and, if not, if he will consider the introduction of more effective legislation.

73.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Justice if existing legislation gives the Gardai control over the movements of young women and girls on to and from ships docked at Cork ports; and if he will consider the introduction of more effective legislation, if he deems it necessary.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 72 and 73 together.

I have been considering the matter for some time and if I am satisfied that the position is likely to be improved by giving greater powers of control to the Garada Síochána I hope to include a provision in a general Bill which I expect to be able to introduce this session.
