Vol. 222 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Untrained National Teachers.

117.

asked the Minister for Education if, further to a previous reply on the subject of the proposed arrangements for untrained national teachers, he is aware that under an agreement reached in Northern Ireland in 1945 untrained teachers with more than 20 years' service were given incremental credit at the rate of one increment for each four years' service in excess of 20; and that this has subsequently been increased to one increment for each three years in excess of 20; and if bearing in mind the success of this agreement in Northern Ireland, he will now introduce a similar agreement for those untrained teachers over 53 years of age who will not be included in the proposed short training courses.

Following further discussion with the Irish National Teachers' Organisation it has now been decided that untrained teachers up to 56 years of age on 1st July, 1966 may be accepted for special training courses commencing in 1966. The question of salary adjustments for those untrained teachers over 56 years of age on 1st July, 1966, was discussed at a recent meeting of the Conciliation Council for National Teachers and an agreed recommendation was made in regard to it. This agreed recommendation has been accepted by the Ministers for Education and Finance.
