Vol. 222 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - 1916 GPO Commemoration Stand.

9.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Finance whether imported wood or wood products were utilised in the construction of the 1916 GPO commemoration stand; and, if so, if he is satisfied that Irish products were inadequate for the purpose.

The contract for the erection of the stand provided that the contractors would supply, erect and remove the structure after use and that all the materials were to remain the contractors' property. In accordance with the usual practice it was specified that all materials, appliances and fittings were, wherever possible, to be of home manufacture.

Some imported as well as some Irish wood products were used in the construction of the stand. The imported materials consisted of chipboard and a small amount of plywood from the contractors' stock. All other wood-products used were of Irish manufacture. In regard to the chipboard I am advised that the contractors were unable to procure from their suppliers Irish-made chipboard which could be guaranteed as suitable for external use and imported resin-bonded chipboard was accordingly used.
