Vol. 222 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leinster House Extensions.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance when it is expected that the new extensions to Leinster House will be ready for use; and if he will state (a) the estimated cost and (b) the expenditure to date.

The five office floors of the extension will be finished in about a fortnight's time. The Restaurant should be finished by August.

The extension forms part of a major scheme of alterations and additions to Leinster House which, it is estimated, will cost approximately £650,000 and will be completed by the end of 1966. The total expenditure to date is about £472,000.

In present circumstances, when many hundreds of families in this country are homeless, does the Parliamentary Secretary not consider that this money would more wisely and better be spent on providing houses for people in this city and in the country who have not a decent roof over their heads?

Can the Parliamentary Secretary give, a breakdown of the expenditure in each of the years since this was commenced?

I have not got this information.

Would it not be fair to say that it was commenced three or four years ago?

In 1962. The questioner does not ask for a year by year breakdown of the figures and so I have not got them.
