Vol. 224 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Registered Factories.

17.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of factories that are registered in Dublin, Cork and Limerick.

The number of factory premises in Dublin, Cork and Limerick on the official register of the Factory Inspectorate for the year ended 30th September, 1965 was as follows:

Co. Dublin, including the Borough Corporation of Dublin, 4,099.

Co. Cork, including the Borough Corporation of Cork, 1,659.

Co. Limerick including the Borough Corporation of Limerick, 426.

18.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of factories that are registered in the Republic of Ireland.

In the year ended 30th September, 1965 there were 11,570 factory premises on the official register of the Factory Inspectorate in the Republic of Ireland.

Could I ask the Minister if there is a booklet available giving in condensed form the salient points of the Factories Act?

I do not know, but all this information is available in the annual report of the factories inspectorate.

Is there a book giving in condensed form important aspects of the Factories Act?

I shall find out but I do not think there is.

Will the Minister consider issuing such a booklet?

That is a separate question.

It is very difficult to say what the salient points of an Act are. I am sure Parliament would not want to produce an Act sections of which they did not want to be known. I imagine the Act would be taken in too.

I am sure the Minister is aware that copies of the Factories Act are supposed to be displayed in factories but being, if you like, in Civil Service language, they do not give clear and distinct information to the workers of their entitlements. What Deputy Treacy is seeking is a condensed version showing workers' entitlements.

This is quite irrelevant to the question on the Order Paper.

It might be desirable to have an explanatory booklet rather than the salient points. I will have a look at that.
