Vol. 225 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Marriage Benefit.

41.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if British employment contributions are reckonable for marriage benefit.

British employment contributions are reckonable for marriage benefit under the Social Welfare Acts provided that the woman marries in this country and that not less than 156 employment contributions have been paid in respect of her under the Social Welfare Acts, including not less than 26 such contributions since she was last employed in Great Britain.

Is the requirement as to contributions not, in fact, more stringent than if they were ordinary Irish stamps?

No, it is not.

They do not count at all. She still requires to have 26 in this country.

Since she was last employed in Great Britain.

In other words, the 156 English ones are an extra stringent regulation that may disqualify her.

I think that is a wrong interpretation.

It is a right interpretation.
