Vol. 226 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Data Processing Personnel.

14.

asked the Minister for Local Government the conditions of employment of persons working in the Hollerith automatic data processing section in (a) Dublin Corporation and (b) Dublin County Council; and why there is a differential in the status of such persons in the two bodies.

I understand that persons engaged in the machine accounting section in Dublin Corporation, other than punch card operators, are classified as officers and as such are subject to similar employment conditions as other officers of the corporation. Punch card operators are classified as servants and employment conditions applicable to servants apply to them. In Dublin County Council, there are five persons engaged in data processing who are classified as servants. The county council have not decided finally on what type of data processing system should be retained on a permanent basis and accordingly have not determined the form the permanent staffing should take.
