Vol. 227 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Wool.

8.

(Cavan), Mr. Harte, Mr. Gilhawley, and Mr. McLaughlin asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will meet a deputation of mountain sheep farmers to discuss their problems regarding the free sale of wool prior to the introduction of legislation to deal with this matter.

A deputation of mountain sheep farmers was received by officers of my Department on 9th March. The deputation sought an assurance that compulsory sale would not be a feature of the legislation on wool marketing which I am having prepared.

Compulsory sale of wool through a central purchasing organisation is not envisaged.

Will the Minister state if he has considered the sheep farmers for representation on the Agricultural Council?

Is what being considered?

Will this group be considered?

This group represent only a limited few of the total number of sheep rearers in the country.

They are the organised group who represent all. Will the Minister state whether he intends to put any group dealing with wool on the council?

That is a separate question.

It applies to this.

It does not; it is an entirely separate matter.

One would need to be at the fair in Donegal to get an answer to a question.

Wool gathering.
