Vol. 228 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Travelling Expenses of Road Overseers.

21.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the fact that road overseers employed by county councils have to use their own motor cars to supervise work over a wide area, he will consider allowing them travelling expenses.

The grant of travelling expenses to road overseers is a matter for the local authority in the first instance. A number of county councils have submitted for my sanction proposals to pay overseers who use motorised transport in the carrying out of their duties a travelling allowance of £1 per week. These proposals are being examined and I will give my decision when this examination is completed.

Is it not a fact that if Deputy Fahey is not aware of it, the Minister is aware that there was a Labour Court conference and that the result, given last November, was a recommendation for £1 a week? The trade unions were taking an interest in it——

Deputy Fahey is entitled to take an interest in it as well as Deputy Tully. In fact there is no evidence that Deputy Tully took any interest in it.

Is the Minister not aware——

The Minister is not aware.

Would he go back for a considerable time on his files and check?
