Vol. 228 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Glengad (Donegal) Landing Facilities.

15.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the present position in relation to the provision of better landing facilities for Glengad fishermen, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I arranged for an officer of my Department to pay a special visit to Bunagee and Portaleen recently to investigate what improvements in harbour facilities are warranted to meet the present and expected needs of the Glengad fishermen. His report is in course of preparation and I will consider it when it is completed.

This reply was given in this House ten years ago, four years before I became a Member. Because I asked this question a few weeks ago, was it necessary for the Minister to send out an inspector to find out what an inspector found out ten years ago?

It was a different inspector.

The inspectors called on 4th and 5th April, 1967, when they were in the area and so it would be beyond the bounds of our capabilities to have the report in answer to the question. Circumstances have changed considerably in the ten years mentioned by the Deputy.

Of course they have deteriorated but what are you doing about it?

Whatever scheme was planned ten years ago would be completely out of date now.

Is it not a fact that this has taken place because of the local elections?

I am not in a position, unlike the Fine Gael Party, to make grandiose promises.
