Vol. 229 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin City Piggeries.

9.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether any extra supervision of piggeries in builtup areas of Dublin city is provided during the summer months; if he will give the present known number of piggeries; what conditions are listed as necessary under health legislation for keeping piggeries; and if his Department are aware of the widespread fear of householders regarding the danger of infectious diseases from such piggeries.

I am informed by Dublin Corporation that more frequent inspections of piggeries in the city are carried out during the summer months.

The latest information as to the number of piggeries is that there were 193 within the county borough last September. The Public Health (Ireland) Act, 1878, makes it an offence to keep any swine or pig sty so as to become a nuisance to any person or injurious to health. Specific conditions as to lighting, ventilation, cleanliness, water supply etc. for the purpose of meeting the requirements of this Act are contained in the corporation bye-laws for the keeping of animals.

My Department is not aware of any widespread fear of householders of the danger of infectious diseases from piggeries.
