Vol. 231 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Building Materials.

1.

asked the Taoiseach what proportion of materials for the building industry are imported (a) from non-sterling countries and (b) from countries which have devalued their currencies this month, naming the countries concerned.

It is estimated that in the year 1964 the imports of commodities of a type used in the building and construction industry from non-sterling countries amounted to about one-fifth of the total supply, that is to say, imports plus home production less exports, of such commodities. The corresponding proportion for imports of these commodities from countries which have devalued their currencies this month is estimated at about onesixth. The countries concerned are: The United Kingdom, Cyprus, Fiji, Hong Kong, Israel, Malawi, Malta, Mauritius, Spain, Guyana, Jamaica, Gambia, Ceylon, Denmark, New Zealand and Iceland.
