Vol. 232 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Bye-Laws.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he intends to revise the bye-laws for local authorities for (a) building, (b) housing and (c) sanitary services; and, if so, when new bye-laws will be brought into force.

The making and revision of bye-laws under the housing and sanitary services Acts are matters in the first instance for the local authority concerned, and are generally subject to my consent.

In regard to building bye-laws, An Foras Forbartha are at present, at my request, drafting regulations under section 86 of the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963. These regulations, when made, will replace the building bye-laws made under earlier legislation.

The ones that went up were better than the ones made by you about road signs.

We did not make any about the road signs and have not made any decision with regard to new road signs.

They are up.

They are an experiment.

Experiment, my eye. Local authority employees were employed to put them up and the local authorities have been blamed for them.

They are an experiment and their purpose is to get reactions and we have got Deputy Tully's reactions.

A tremendous waste of public money—that is what they are.

Will Deputies allow questions to continue?
