Vol. 232 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Superannuation Rights of Nurses.

47.

asked the Minister for Health what is the position regarding the superannuation of nurses in voluntary hospitals who are due to retire this year; if they will be allowed to participate in the proposed new superannuation scheme; and, if they cannot participate in the new scheme, if he will authorise hospital boards to grant them pensions and gratuity similar to those proposed in the new scheme.

andMrs. Burke asked the Minister for Health what is the position regarding the superannuation of nurses in voluntary hospitals who are due to retire this year; if they will be allowed to participate in the proposed new superannuation scheme; and, if they may not participate in the new scheme, if he will authorise hospital boards to grant them pensions and gratuities similar to those proposed in the new scheme.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 47 and 48 together.

I expect that the general superannuation scheme will be available this year for adoption by the hospitals concerned. Nurses and other members of the staffs due to retire after its introduction will be eligible to receive the benefits of the scheme. As regards those retiring before the commencement of the general scheme, there is already in operation an arrangement under which benefits may be granted to members of the staffs of hospitals in which formal superannuation schemes have not been provided.
