Vol. 232 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salary Scale of Nurses.

45.

asked the Minister for Health if he will grant discretionary powers to all health authorities to give credit to nurses for previous service in the application of salary scales (a) on transfer from a voluntary hospital to a local authority hospital or vice-versa, and (b) on transfer from a hospital outside Ireland to a local authority hospital.

46.

andMrs. Burke asked the Minister for Health if he will grant discretionary powers to all health authorities to give credit to nurses for previous service in the application of salary scales (a) on transfer from a voluntary hospital to a local authority hospital or vice-versa, and (b) on transfer from a hospital outside Ireland to a local authority hospital in the State.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 45 and 46 together.

Standard practice in the local health authority service is that a new appointee enters the appropriate salary scale at the minimum, but departures from this practice have been granted in a small number of special cases in an effort to resolve local recruitment problems.

In recent years the concession of limited incremental credit in respect of previous hospital experience has been granted in a few areas to staff nurses taking up permanent appointments in health authority hospitals, but there is no compelling reason for a general extension of this concession, nor have health authorities approached me about it.

Deputies will appreciate, I am sure, that I have no direct functions in regard to the salary etc. arrangements obtaining in voluntary hospitals.
