Vol. 233 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Council Cottages.

35.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will outline the new scheme for the sale of council cottages, giving the date of introduction and the cottages to be affected by the order.

Section 94 of the Housing Act, 1966, provides that a local authority shall make a purchase scheme under the Labourers Act, 1936, before 31st December, 1967, in respect of cottages provided by them before 1st January, 1966.

Rural cottages provided after that date may be sold or leased to tenants in accordance with a purchase scheme prepared by the local authority and approved by me under article 4 of the Housing Authorities (Loan Charges Contributions and Management) Regulations, 1967. The sale price under these schemes is the current market (or replacement) value of the cottages less a discount not exceeding three per cent for each year after five during which the tenant has been in continuous occupation of a local authority dwelling, subject to a maximum discount of 45 per cent.
