Vol. 233 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway School Bus Fares.

7.

asked the Minister for Education if he will increase the subsidy paid towards school fares for children attending Galway city schools who live in the Mervue and Renmore areas to enable them to meet the recent increase in school bus fares introduced by CIE.

My Department's grant in this case is being increased as from 1st April, 1968, to cover, in full, the recent increase in fares to and from the city centre.

Is there any proposal to provide a corresponding subsidy in regard to bus fares for the countless thousands of relatively poor people who have to use the buses to get to and from their place of work?

That is an entirely different matter. This question refers to school children in Galway.

And a very much larger one.

Can the Minister explain why it costs more much nearer to town for school children travelling in the bus than it does in the case of children living farther out?

That is a separate question.

It is bound up in the one journey. Surely they will not get off half way?

It is a separate question.

It does not arise.

It arises on the buses.
