Vol. 233 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Illumination of Pedestrian Crossings.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make arrangements for the illumination of pedestrian crossings.

The provision of illumination for a pedestrian crossing is the responsibility of the local authority concerned. As to recommended standards for this purpose, my Department is examining the subject in consultation with officers of Dublin Corporation and Dublin County Council and is not yet in a position to issue recommendations to the local authorities. However, the local authorities concerned are aware of the conclusions reached to-date, which are to the effect that adequate lighting of crossings can best be achieved by the provision of public street lighting to traffic route standard. Unfortunately public lighting to this standard is not available in all suburban areas and may not be provided there for some time, and in such cases the special illumination of pedestrian crossings has to be considered but this presents problems. For example, such illumination could give pedestrians a false sense of security and encourage them to use the crossing when it might not be safe to do so. The problem of glare from wet surfaces also arises. The study I have mentioned will be pursued with all the expedition possible.
