Vol. 235 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Hospitals.

48.

asked the Minister for Defence the total number of military hospitals and their bed capacity; and if there is any liaison between these hospitals and clinical teaching hospitals.

There are at present three military hospitals with a total bed-capacity of 517.

There is considerable liaison between the military hospitals and clinical teaching hospitals. Four of the five civilian surgeons who attend at the military hospitals in Dublin and Cork are on the staffs of clinical teaching hospitals. Civilian consultants from clinical teaching hospitals are frequently asked to see patients from the military hospitals and military patients are referred to clinical teaching hospitals as appropriate.

Army doctors and nurses attend postgraduate courses in clinical teaching hospitals. Army doctors attend medical meetings in these hospitals and have ready access to them on an informal basis.
