Vol. 235 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - IRA Pensioners.

49.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that there are a number of men who hold pretruce medals without bar for four to five years service in the old IRA and who are over 68 years of age; and if he will take steps to extend to such men the facilities for free travel and free light already extended to old age pensioners and some IRA veterans, in view of their limited numbers and the modest expense involved.

As I indicated in my reply to Deputy Healy on the 12th June, 1968, the benefits of free travel, free electricity allowance and free television/radio licences are being made available to the holders of a "duly awarded" Service (1917-1921) Medal, on the same conditions and subject generally to the same limitations as apply in the case of old age pensioners.

The schemes will not cover persons who are eligible to make application for similar concessions under the schemes administered by the Department of Social Welfare.
