Vol. 237 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transportation of Livestock.

31.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if, in view of reports in regard to withdrawal of certain shipping services between this country and Great Britain, he is satisfied that there is sufficient shipping space available to ensure the smooth export of agricultural products; and if he will give this matter special consideration.

32.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the decision of the shipping company concerned to discontinue the operation of its regular sailings for the transportation of livestock from Waterford to Liverpool; and if he has any plans for the provision of an alternative livestock service from the port.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose taking Questions Nos. 31 and 32 together.

I am aware of recent announcements of the withdrawal of certain boats that were engaged in carrying cattle to Britain from Dublin to Glasgow and Waterford to Birkenhead. While it appears that there is currently sufficient shipping space available to meet the needs of the cattle export trade generally, I am examining in detail the position created by these recent developments
