Vol. 237 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lighting of Rubble Holders.

92.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware of the growing practice of deposit rubble holders being left outside business premises in Dublin when demolition work is in progress; and if he will ensure that warning lights are attached to these holders to avoid danger to motorists.

The Garda Síochána consider that, on the whole, the use of these containers for the regular removal of rubble and waste involves less inconvenience to the general public as well as less of a traffic hazard than the use of ordinary trucks. Nevertheless, there have been some complaints about certain aspects of the operations and there have been discussions between the Garda, the corporation and the firms concerned, of whom there are now several. The Garda expect it will be possible to solve the problems that have given cause for complaint.

The particular point about the use of lights on the containers is a matter for the corporation rather than the Garda who have no direct powers in relation to it and who, besides, would prefer to see the containers removed at night where at all possible. Where this may not be possible, however, they hope to arrange to have them lighted.
