Vol. 238 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Revenue Improvement.

24.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether in reference to a reply of 31st January 1968 CIE have reported to him on efforts to improve revenue by new business; and what results in general have been achieved.

CIE have offset to a substantial extent the impact of rising costs by new business and by greater productivity. The Board has informed me that, during the five-year period ending 31st March, 1969, new business has been gained amounting to an estimated £6.5 million, representing an average annual increase of 6.2 per cent on the Board's basic revenue of £20.8 million in 1963-64. The figure of £6.5 million excludes additional revenue due to increases in fares and rates. It also excludes additional revenue secured by the Board under the Department of Education free transport scheme for school children. CIE also estimate that there has been a growth in productivity of approximately 13 per cent during the same period.
