Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Service Pensioners.

196.

asked the Minister for Finance if retired post office officials receive increases in their pensions whenever the salaries of serving members are increased; and, if so, if there are any arrangements whereby retired teachers, Gardaí and civil servants can benefit when increases are given to serving members, in view of the sharp rise in the cost of living in recent years.

Pension increases for all branches of the public service, including teachers, Gardaí and civil servants, are applied on a uniform basis to all groups.

In the last Budget I accepted the principle of parity, that is, increasing existing pensions to the level of those of officers currently retiring, and I intend to move towards it over a number of years. As a start, the pensions of those who retired before the general pay increase of 1st February, 1964, have, with effect from 1st August, 1969, been brought up to the level of the pensions of equivalent colleagues who retired with the benefit of that increase.
