Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Air Crash Inquiry.

218.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when a public inquiry will be held into the crash of the Aer Lingus Viscount, St. Phelim, which occurred in March, 1968.

The preliminary investigation by the inspector of accidents appointed by me under the Air Navigation (Investigation of Accidents) Regulations, 1957 is still in progress. Further trawling operations requested by the inspector were carried out during August and September and resulted in the recovery of additional wreckage. This is at present under expert examination and the results are expected to assist materially in bringing the preliminary investigation to the report stage.

When I receive the report of the preliminary investigation I will consider whether a public inquiry under the regulations is called for.
