Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Bus Service.

294.

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider expanding the school bus service to enable pupils to attend inter-school football matches on Saturday afternoons, in view of the fact that participation in these sports is such an important part of children's education.

The cost of school transport is already placing such a heavy burden on the taxpayer that I could not contemplate adding further to the cost of it. It is serving its basic purpose well through enabling children in rural areas to obtain post-primary education which would not otherwise be available to them. Furthermore, the taxation and licensing arrangements for school buses confine their use to the transport of children to and from school.
