Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Reserve.

330.

asked the Minister for Defence the extra cost of calling up the Army reserve; and the numbers called up.

Up to the 30th September, 1969, the total cost of the Vote for Defence of pay, allowances and rations issued to members of the Reserve Defence Force was £135,000. The current weekly cost is £14,000. These amounts do not include incidental expenditure under a number of headings, such as travel warrants and clothing, for which figures are not readily available.

319 officers were called up and 308 reported for service. The corresponding figures for other ranks are 2,501 and 1,418. I should perhaps explain that the figure 2,501 included 1,090 reservists who had been posted to the non-effective list.

331.

asked the Minister for Defence why members of the Army reserve are still retained on active duty while members of the regular force have been assigned to film work.

A commitment to supply troops for a short period in the autumn of this year in connection with a film being made at Coolmoney Camp had been entered into before the calling out of the first line reserve of the Defence Forces in August last. In the circumstances it was decided to provide the required troops but their provision is, of course, subject to the exigencies of the service.
