Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Pollution.

93.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has considered from the public health aspect the address of Dr. E.A. Hirsh of the Veterinary College of Ireland at the British Veterinary Association annual conference last September regarding the mounting problem of water pollution; if he will establish a committee to examine and advise on preventative action which should now be taken; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that as the Government's programmes for expanding industry, housing and agriculture progress there is a danger that water pollution could rise to an undesirable level from a public health aspect. For this reason I asked An Foras Forbartha in 1967 to set up a water information division. This division has been established. Its work will enable the areas where there are risks of water pollution occurring at a significant level to be identified so that appropriate remedial measures may be taken where necessary.
