Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Christmas Relief Grants.

101.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will now make suitable provision for substantial Christmas relief grants for the urban areas of Birr, Tullamore, Portlaoise and Mountmellick and the several non-urbanised towns in which there appears to be unemployment; and if the local authorities concerned will be notified well in advance of the amounts to be provided.

I have already advised local authorities that it is not possible this year to allocate grants for new works under Subheads J and K of the Local Government Vote for employment schemes in urban areas and non-urbanised towns. The limited provisions will not be sufficient for an allocation of such grants after allowing for the payment of moneys outstanding in respect of grants allocated in past years.
