Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

105.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that his failure to promote legislation as requested by a resolution of Dublin Corporation in November, 1965, to enable the corporation to give adequate financial assistance to the Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to assist that society in dealing with the problem of stray and unwanted dogs and cats and cruelty to animals is causing grave concern that the society's good work may have to be curtailed; if he will now promote the necessary legislation or in some other way come to the assistance of the society; and, if not, why.

As I have stated in reply to previous questions on this subject, the request made by Dublin Corporation to have the law amended to enable the corporation to make a grant to the Dogs' and Cats' Home was noted for consideration in connection with any future revisions of local government legislation. I do not intend to promote special legislation on the matter. The general question of widening the permissive powers of local authorities to enable them, inter alia, to contribute towards the expenses of bodies such as the Dogs' and Cats' Home is now being considered as part of the review of local government which is in progress in my Department.
