Vol. 243 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New 50 Pence Coin.

58.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that in Britain the new 50 pence coin has been described as wrong in shape, wrong in size and wrong in design; and if he will now take steps to make sure that the shape and size of a similar coin in this country do not lead to confusion when in circulation.

The criticisms to which the Deputy refers were neither widespread nor well founded. I believe that the shape and size of the proposed Irish 50 new penny coin are quite distinctive and that the public will readily become familiar with it.

Is the Minister aware that the shape and size of this coin has caused confusion in Britain? Has the Minister got one of these coins in his possession?

I have a sample of one of the coins and it is one of the most beautiful things I have seen.

Perhaps, the Minister would be generous and pass it around.

I know very well it would never come back.

It would not get beyond these benches.
