Vol. 243 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killarney Sewage Works.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the sanction of a purification plant and treatment works in regard to the sewage of Killarney before its discharge into Lower Lake at Rossbay; and the total amount of money paid to consulting engineers in connection with the said plant.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government if his Department are aware of the serious adverse publicity in both Irish and British papers that Killarney received over the sewage discharge into the Lower Lake; and what action it is proposed to take in the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 26 and 27 together.

I have approved in principle proposals for the main sewer and new disposal works in Killarney.

There is no information in my Department as to the amounts paid to consulting engineers in connection with these proposed works.

In view of the widespread nature of water pollution, would the Minister consider making a comprehensive statement on this matter when he is dealing with his Estimate?

I will deal with that matter on the Estimate if the Opposition do not succeed in avoiding a discussion on it as they did last year.
